What is Coccidia (Coccidiosis)?
Coccidia are small protozoan's (one-celled organisms) that live in the lining of the intestinal tracts of dogs and cats, most commonly in kittens and puppies but can be found in older pets as well. Animals will start to show symptoms when the immune system is suppressed by a change in diet, atmosphere, contracting an illness, stress or in other ways.
Most Coccidia are of the genus called Isospora. Isospora canis and I. ohioensis are the species most often encountered in dogs; I. felis and I. rivolta are the most common in cats. Regardless of which species is present it generally refers to the disease as coccidiosis (or coccidia). As a puppy or kitten ages it tends to develop a natural immunity to the effects of Coccidia. As an adult it may carry Coccidia in its intestines, shed the cysts in the feces, but experience no ill effects.
How are Coccidia transmitted?
A puppy or kitten is not born with the Coccidia organisms in its intestine. However, once born, the puppy or kitten is frequently exposed to its mother's feces and if the mother is shedding the infective cysts in her feces then the young animals will likely ingest the cysts and the Coccidia will develop within their intestines. Since young puppies and kittens (usually those less than six months of age) have no immunity to Coccidia, the organisms reproduce in great numbers and parasitize the young animal's intestines. Oftentimes this has severe effects.
From exposure to the Coccidia in feces to onset of the illness is about 7-10 days. Most puppies and kittens who are ill from Coccidia are, therefore, two weeks of age and older. Although most infections are the result of being passed down from the mother at birth, this is not always the case.
Any infected kitten or puppy that is contagious in breeding facilities, shelters, animal hospitals, etc., should isolate those infected from those that are not.
Coccidia organisms are not limited to dogs and cats. It can also be found in other animals such as kid goats, birds, cows, humans etc. (usually transmitted the same way).
The most common type of coccidia found in dogs and cats do not have any effect on humans. However, there are less common types of coccidia that can put humans at risk. One parasite, called Cryptosporidium, may be carried by dogs or cats, and may possibly be transmitted to people. This parasite has been found in public water supplies in some major cities. Another coccidial organism, Toxoplasma, is carried by cats and is of GREAT concern to pregnant women due to the potential cause of birth defects in newborns. This organism is able to complete its life cycle in the cat only.
These two coccidial parasites pose a health risk for immune-suppressed humans (i.e., AIDS patients, those who are taking immune suppressant drugs, cancer patients, and the elderly etc.). Good hygiene and proper disposal of dog and cat feces are important in minimizing risk of transmission of all parasites to humans. Even though there is risk of pets transmitting parasites to humans, it does not warrant removing the pet from the household. If the woman is pregnant, have the cat checked for Toxoplasma at your local veterinarian health care provider.
What are the symptoms of Coccidiosis?
The primary sign of an animal suffering with Coccidiosis is diarrhea. A puppy (sometimes older dogs) will show more symptoms:
Vomiting
Loss of appetite
Diarrhea - (may be mild to severe depending on the level of infection)
Mucous - may be present in the stool
In advanced cases
All of the above plus
Bloody diarrhea
Pieces of the intestinal lining may be found in the stool
Dehydration
Weak hind legs
Seizures
In some instances, death
What are the risks?
Although many cases are mild, it is not uncommon to see severe, bloody diarrhea result in dehydration and even death. This is most common in animals that are ill or infected with other parasites, bacteria or viruses. Coccidiosis is very contagious, especially among young kittens and puppies. Entire kennels and catteries may become contaminated.
A microscopic fecal exam by a veterinarian will detect the cysts confirming a diagnosis.

Suggested Use for Kocci Free:
Administer orally 4 times daily for up to 10 days. Administer Kocci Free twice daily for building up of the immune system. For preventative dosing administer Kocci Free twice a day for 10 days (after weaning if applicable). When co-administered with Parvaid or Kitty Distempaid, four times daily administration for ten days reflects the standard dose of Kocci Free.
In most cases it will take 10 days to rid your pet of Coccidia. However, if you have a crowded situation (i.e. kennel, farm, unclean property etc.) you may have to perform a 10 day on and 10 day off cycle program. This program consists of Kocci Free and Parvaid (for dogs) or Kitty Distempaid (for cats). Administer Kocci Free for 10 days (be sure to clean the premises well during treatment). Take your pet off ten days. Go back on for another 10 days and back off. You will do this until you have completed 2-3 ten-day cycles. Refer to chart below:

- We started using Kocci Free in our kennel about 3 years ago. This came about after searching the internet for answers. Our beautiful boxers would get to be 6 weeks old and would start getting sick. After several diagnosis of the dreaded Parvo, we were sent on our way. The pups that did survive had other problems such as pus coming from the sites of the multiple injections of IV fluids and antibiotics. It was very heartbreaking as these pups were like our very own children. Many many tears and $$ shed. So off to the internet I went...Not only did I find the Ambertech website...but so much information...about exactly what we were experiencing. We have well water at our home...we had it tested and guess what...we have Giardia and Coccidia in the water...our major problem solved...We now treat our little ones with Kocci Free at 13 days, 6 weeks, 9 weeks and 12 weeks and of course use bottled water. The well water doesn't seem to affect our adults...now we have a whole arena of products to use!!! Fabulous website....so much useful information all for free. God bless you!!
